Collecting food data will show how many restaurants exit for each distinctive culture. Perhaps this can be compared in a ratio to the population of Auckland. Is there a consistency ie. 20% Malaysian = 20% Malaysian population in Auckland.....most likley this correlation is not 1:1.

has the Metacity Datatown book been useful? I think Sue Evans suggested it to help you lift your project out of the very basic idea of mapping as only about location.
It seems you have already thought this through - your suggestion that there may be a data comparison between ethnic restaurants and ethnic populations is an interesting one.
It would be a good idea to get hold of the data on the restaurants as fast as you can to get your project moving along. How has that been going? Email me if you are having trouble getting this and I can follow up with Sue
